moving the podcast – interview from October 30, 2013
Matt has a great blog that you should check out, and I’ve linked some of his posts below to help you get to know him a little better over there. Meanwhile, take a listen as he talks to me about not being “one of those types of pastors”, how his family grew from one to four children in the course of five months, and how he’s so tall he once impaled his head on a coat hook. We also have a great chat about the benefits and challenges of communicating through the written word.
“Yes, He called me to be a pastor, but I’m not just that.”
0:00 ~ not a stereotypical pastor
9:07 ~ a great chat about writing
17:50 ~ 1 to 4 kids in five months
30:50 ~ the hook incident (or: the perils of being 6’7″)
36:25 ~ wife with a gun!

I asked Clay to come talk to us about his writing process. Clay talks about the unique challenges of writing book number 2, fully experiencing the adventure of field research (while still taking notes), and how he turns it all into a book worth reading.
Scroll down a little further to see a couple of short videos from our talk last year!
“There are just stories upon stories that are hidden in these trips and these tales,
and it’s going to be very fun when I finally get to tell them all.”
0:00 ~ writing book #2: “Definitely no room to relax.”
8:50 ~ the unique challenges of doing field research
16:45 ~ turning the bits and pieces into a book
26:45 ~ creative momentum (and it’s never finished, just submitted)
29:20 ~ “When you write non-fiction, you’re the character”
33:30 ~ a few teasers (couldn’t you just smack him?)
Here are two Clay Bonuses: I’ve previously posted the audio from my Undead interviews with Clay. Here is the last piece, where Clay breaks down the chapters from that book.
And here is a little fun bit we did, where I gave Clay a Pop Culture Quiz.
Knox McCoy is a man of varied interests! We talked about writing and publishing and podcasting and video production…oh, and horses with swords on their foreheads. That are not unicorns. Because unicorns are evil.
And also, I just liked listening to his voice because I totally crush on it. Isn’t it lovely? *sigh*
I’m sorry, what were we talking about?
0:00 ~ my name is Knox McCoy…
2:00 ~ freelance writer.
6:05 ~ not a bad but: writing humor
10:00 ~ cracking the code of self-publishing
15:10 ~ the Knox voice (podcasting!)
19:20 ~ For Love! (it’s all about The Bachelorette)
24:00 ~ Swordhorse Studios
30:00 ~ new and renewed projects
I loved this chat. I was so unprepared, my first question was “Ricky is nice”. But the magical Ricky kept the conversation flowing! We talked about fatherhood, being a blogger vs a writer, his work-in-progress and our fear of failure. And then he did a magic trick.
I’m still trying to figure it out.
0:00 ~ Who is this?
6:30 ~ fatherhood
9:50 ~ “I’m a blogger, not a writer”
14:45 ~ the fear of failure
18:30 ~ Changeup (which I keep calling “The” Changeup)
25:10 ~ computer stuff
28:10 ~ Ricky does magic
