This chasm between what I think I am and what I really am has never been more difficult to cross than now. Unemployed me couldn’t possibly be a treasured piece? What am I without to-do lists and deadlines and an organizational email address?

When I was about 12 I finished all the books in the 14+ section (yeah, I was that kid) and had to move on to other bookshops. It was sad.

But I was lucky enough to grow up  there – with those books and those shelves – from a six-year-old holding her daddy’s hand to a weird preteen sniffing the books when no one was looking.  I was lucky enough to experience the joy of book-hunting, of going in with no idea what you want and finding that hidden gem or that old favourite recalled from a foggy memory.

Today, when I think of a teacher’s chalk covered hands, or a painter’s multicolored features, or even a mechanic’s greased fingernails, something sparks.  I see their hands and I know that they’ve the spent day creating something, building something, making something work and it shows with what’s left on their hands.
