A Year in the 80’s – like, totally me
IN WHICH I SQUEEZE 10 YEARS INTO 52 DAYS

When I say I grew up in the 80’s, I really mean it.
I turned 10 a few months before the ball dropped on the end of ’79, and I had just passed 20 when 1989 closed out in the same fashion. Only, then I was old enough to stay up and watch it happen.
Memories from my first decade of life are patchy at best: snapshots and bits of mental film that I string together as best I can. Honestly, I don’t have really strong memories until I was 12 or 13.
So when I think about “growing up”, I think of the 80’s, the decade when I was starting to be who I am.
Ok, well maybe that was happening already, and I just didn’t know it yet. But that period between 10 and 20 was pretty amazing, a mixture of understanding and confusion, a constant battle between feeling grown up already and realizing I had a hell of a long way to go.
Ah, youth! I treasure those days.
But I wouldn’t have them to do over for anything!! 😉
What I am happy to do is take this year of Wednesdays to look back at the 80’s. The fabulous, may they never be forgotten (so we can’t make those fashion mistakes twice) 1980’s!
So pull on your Air Jordan’s and hold on to your shoulder pads, cause we’re going back in time! (Get it? Like Back to the Future? It’s an 80’s reference, ya’ll! I am so good at this.)
Here’s me in the 80’s:
.
Do you have a favorite decade?
What do you remember most about the 1980’s?

Oh, Wednesdays are going to be good.
Haha, maybe. I’m still planning it out – hope it doesn’t disappoint!
I quoted your mom’s note at breakfast and we all want to know – did you show it to the teacher?
No, lol! 🙂
Wow, this is amazing! I wasn’t alive during the 80’s, so all I’ve seen of it are from old sitcoms and movies (and some photos from my parents’ youth!); this is going to be interesting!
My favourite decade would be the 90’s. I really like being a 90’s kid, and I actually do remember a fair bit from that decade.
I liked the 90’s a lot too. 🙂 I can’t blame you for enjoying growing up in that decade. I hope this is fun for everyone this year. And not too boring!
I can’t say about others, but this is definitely going to be really interesting for me! 😀
Yay!
How fun! Looking forward to Wednesdays now!
Thanks Patti! I hope it’s fun! Now I’m getting nervous, haha.
Boots,
I began aggressively opting out of fashion in the eighties…..I’m still out of step. Finished high school in 82 so it felt like my first decade of exploring / moving around, I have continued exploring so each decade has a different flavor – I like them all.

I have never been good at fashion myself. It’s enough for me that my clothes are clean and everything matches. Or mostly matches, because I’m TERRIBLE at knowing what matches.
I liked most of the decades, just not the 2000’s so much. My thirties were not so fun. The forties, though…those are going pretty great so far. I’m glad you liked all of your decades!! You’ve got to savor the flavors, right?
Yeah, I’m not saying all the decades were amazing, they just all seem to have a feel that was distinct and were noteworthy for the phase(s) experienced. I suspect overall I remember the good stuff, crap only has so much staying power. 🙂
Michelle! These are the first photos I’ve ever seen of you! Hello, 80’s Michelle!!!!!! I love seeing the 80’s you and your hair/clothes/strawberry blonde hair/big smile. You’re gorgeous! The 80’s were really something else, that’s for sure. Thanks for sharing!
Haha, I would have said homely, but that’s nice of you! I basically look the same now, just older. Much older. Haha. 🙂
Whatever. You’ll always be younger than me. 🙂
