Movie Quote Monday – Star Trek Into Darkness

Don’t worry, no major plot spoilers here! Just a little talk about theme. And I do love a movie with multiple themes! Give me my money’s worth, filmmakers!

I definitely got my money’s worth with Into Darkness. So much so that I’m gonna go give them some more of my money and watch it again this week.

As for this viewing, this is the quote that jumped right out at me:

Kirk:  I have no idea what I’m supposed to do. I only know what I can do. The Enterprise and her crew need someone in that chair who knows what he’s doing. That’s not me. That’s you, Spock.

Have you ever not known what to do in a desperate situation? Were you able to let go of control to someone who could handle it better than you?

In a big way, this is a movie about making choices. Choosing who and what to trust, and whether or not you can trust yourself and your own instincts. Choosing between following the rules and doing what you believe to be right. Choosing between what is moral and ethical versus what will fulfill your own desires. With friendships and love, choosing whether to hold on or let go, whether to go your own way or follow the other person.

Another huge theme is relationships. In the first Star Trek, we saw the characters coming together for the first time. Ok, second I guess, since it takes place on an alternate time line. But it was great to watch those personalities mesh or clash as they navigated their way toward becoming a team. With Into Darkness, it was wonderful to see a smooth continuation between the two movies in how these relationships continue to grow and evolve. Specifically Pike and Kirk, Kirk and Spock, Spock and Uhura. But also the relationship between Captain and crew.

In our relationships, we have to make choices all the time of when to lead and when to follow, when to question and when to trust.

By the end of the movie, each relationship has progressed  further, and I’m loving that as an overall series arc. As much as I enjoyed the plotline in Star Trek Into Darkness, I loved witnessing the maturing of the characters and their relationships probably even more.

Did you see the movie?

Movie Quote Monday – A Christmas Story (special edition)

The Byronic Man has a weekly contest on his blog, and I won the last one – I’m so excited!  I wrote a little poem about setting fire to the personal possessions of your not-so-significant-other-anymore-since-he-just-dumped-you.  Autobiographical.  (Just kidding!)  You can read it here.  I think you should go do that right now.  I’ll wait.

Anyway, I found out Saturday after work, and A Christmas Story is the first thing that popped into my head:

Sweed:  …what is that?
—Dad:  It’s a major award.
Sweed:  A major award?

Dad:  I won it.
—Sweed:   Damn, hell you say, you won it?
Dad: Yeah.  Mind power, Sweed, mind power.
—Ralphie:  The entire neighborhood was turned on.

You have permission to be turned on by my major award: I get to be Blogger Of The Week over at The Byronic Man (damn, hell you say).  It’s true!  He put my picture up, with a testimony about my elegance and shark-fearingness.  It’s totally awesome.

If you haven’t been over to his blog before, you should go check him it out.  I can’t guarantee you’ll end up being a major award winner, like me, but I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Movie Quote Monday – French Kiss

I have often felt responsible for other people’s emotions.  I don’t know if this is a female thing or simply a human thing.  But sometimes I wish I could say something like this:

Kate: Listen, don’t feel guilty.  Because then I’ll start feeling guilty that I made you feel guilty and…  You know…  Actually, that was the old me.  Just feel guilty.  Swim in it.  Till your fingers get all pruney.

Do you ever feel responsible for what someone else is feeling, even though it’s not really your fault?

Have you ever just said, “Go ahead and wallow in it.  I give you permission.”?

Movie Quote Monday – Moonstruck (again)

I couldn’t let February go without one last Valentine-y movie quote.  And I hadn’t planned on using another Moonstruck quote (at least not so soon), but I couldn’t didn’t resist that, either.

This is from the same scene as the last Moonstruck quote, and it’s Ronny’s response to Loretta, who said she could resist the pull she felt toward him.  She told him a person can learn from their mistakes, that they can “say yes to some things and no to other things that are gonna ruin everything”.

Ronny:  Love don’t make things nice – it ruins everything.  It breaks your heart.  It makes things a mess!  We, we aren’t here to make things perfect.  The snowflakes are perfect…  The stars are perfect.  Not us – not us.  We are here to ruin ourselves and…and to break our hearts.

What do you think?

I was really struck by thesinglecell’s quote about love on last week’s Infinite Monkey, and I wonder if she and Ronny are right.
