While you slept,
I came in by the window.
While you slept,
I used that ladder there.
Dangerous thing, a ladder.
Nowadays you can’t
be too careful.
When I was a child,
we slept with unlocked doors.
When I was a child,
we left the windows open
and let the cool evening breezes
brush over us and smooth
our days into dreams in slumber.

For those of you who are used to earthquakes, you’ll just have to bear with me. I live in Virginia and we’re simply not accustomed to that kind of thing. I was in my thirties before I experienced my first quake, a lowly 3.1 or something. And that was soon enough for me. That measly little three-pointer would have lasted me a lifetime. People always heap scorn on the dim-witted but beautiful and busty blonde who walks up the stairs when she hears something go bump in the night. She’s cautious. She’s got her peepers (eyes, dirt-brain) popped and her head is tilted just so (better to hear you with, my dear). And up she goes.
