Interpret This Poem

The Still Steady Stream of Being

Then I finally decide to do it and
Oh, what secret harbored
addiction will unfold itself,
embrace my shaking limbs in
the final moments of tedious
aching countdown of seconds
churning by with the rhythm
of pounding blood and nausea,
Oh yes, my God – how sweet
the smell will be and
just a little repugnant,
that sticky liquid pouring
out and over,
thickening like paste, pouring
out and over the body
and these waiting hands that
held their patience so long
amid the brief encounters that
shocked their skin,
that reverberated against their
very bones, only so long before
an echo of the touch vibrated
through the whole of this being
and I finally decide to do it,
swiftly, with eager mouth devouring
every metallic moment, swiftly
I dive back through and break
the surface of this moment,
this torment of anticipation…

back into the peace of silent solitude…
back into the still steady stream of being…

until the rippling begins again and
I must finally decide to do it.

Is Your God Omnipotent?

So I finally watched the season finale of survivor (no cable and no satellite always puts me a little behind).  This season what was especially interesting for me, as a Christian, was to see Matt going through so much and being so open about his relationship with God.  I suppose everybody who watches survivor really relates to a particular individual at one time or another.

I started reading Jeff Probst’s blog about Survivor soon after Matt was sent to Redemption Island.  At that time, there was a lot of footage shown of Matt praying and of him talking about God’s will.  On one of Jeff’s blogs, an atheist commented that, if there were such a being, God would have more important things to do than worry about how well this kid does on Survivor.  I wasn’t at all surprised to see that kind of statement from an atheist.

What did surprise me is that some Christians were saying the same thing.  It was surprising to see it on commentary by Christians.  But it was a shock to hear someone I know say, “God doesn’t care how Matt does on Survivor!”  Really?  What immediately came to my mind were all the contractors with their vans and ads that shout out, “No Job Is Too Big Or Too Small!”

To give or not to give?

…Nannie brought up her old neighbors and she told us about how her neighbor Burt used to always borrow onions, tea and potatoes.  She said that he had borrowed so many onions, tea and potatoes that there were no hopes of him ever paying them back.  Not that he intended to.  So one day she resolved that she would put an end to this constant borrowing.  

That night, she was reading in her Bible Study, and the Bible verse said that if anyone borrows from you, give freely. And if he comes the next day and borrows more, give again.  So the next time Burt asked, she again gave.

In later years, when Grandpop was drunk and had fallen down, she would call for Burt.

And he would always come.  

He’d say, “Come on Jim, and lie down.”  Grandpop would say he didn’t want to lie down.  But Burt would pick him up anyway.  “Come on Jim and lie down a while.  It’ll make you feel better.”

Nannie said those times were worth more to her than any amounts of onions, tea and potatoes.
