What Are You Thinking? (right this minute)
I once asked a boyfriend, “What are you thinking right this minute?”
We were driving somewhere, I don’t remember where, and my mind was flitting from this topic to that, just all over the place. Nothing important in there at all. And suddenly I wondered what had been in his mind right at that exact moment when I was thinking about whatever it was I was thinking about.
Was it something big? Was it some little nothing? Had he been thinking “it’s almost time to get the oil changed,” or “there’s a bird,” or “what are we going to eat for dinner,” or… It could be anything!
I turned to him with a huge smile and asked, “What are you thinking right this minute?” I was girl-excited; I wanted to know(!).
“Nothing.”
What?
“You must have been thinking something.” I mean, there’s no way his mind was completely blank, right?
And so I clarified my question: “I just want to know what was going through your mind right at that minute. No matter how little it was.”
“Nothing!” He was quite adamant. And annoyed. His mind was, apparently, a complete blank.
I persisted in a persistent manner to inform him that there was no way his mind was a complete blank.
“There’s no way your mind was a complete blank. You had to be thinking something. Even if it was something tiny and inconsequential, like, I don’t know…like…’those trees are really green.’ “
“I wasn’t thinking anything at all.” He could persist too. “I’m not trying to hide anything from you, I swear! I wasn’t thinking anything!”
And so I gave up.
“You don’t have to tell me; I was just being curious.”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how to start a fight out of nothing at all.
~~~
Is it really possible for your mind to be completely blank for long stretches like that?
Or is it just a guy thing?
Have you ever started a fight out of thin air?
What are you thinking right this minute?
😉 ♥
if someone asked me, at any random moment what I was thinking, i would just as likely remember and tell, as not be able to remember…..perhaps i should start using one of those face mask ventilators when i paint….i dont think i can afford to lose too many more brain cells…..;)
Haha, that’s a good point – but at least you knew you were thinking something. I have realized my mind was blank a few times, but it’s rare. And a mask is a good idea, but I hate to tell you it’s an age thing, lol.
There are times when I don’t think of anything, then there are times I just don’t remember and then there are times myt brain races with great ideas and then, fail it all leaves by the time I get the pen and paper.
Lol, I can relate to that last one for sure! I often wish I had a recorder in my brain. And you’re creative, so that speedy mind ideas thing is a side effect of that.
Boots,
I’m thinking…how playful curiosities can lead you into doom. 😒 Perhaps the question could be modified to: “What are some horrible things that could happen in the next few minutes?”
RR
Mark, you made me laugh. I’ll save up some questions like that for next month.
As a guy I can confirm that it is entirely possible to be thinking about nothing. See here: http://youtu.be/gjnLLw5BTmc
That was hilarious! I definitely relate to the wire brain. My old roommate and I would talk that way too – start a conversation about cheeseburgers and end up on hammers in a few sentences. It got to where if one of us said something and the other was silent and then said something completely incongruous a few minutes later, we understood how the other person’s mind got there. And I’ve had plenty of female conversations like that, where we don’t say all we’re thinking to get to different thoughts, but the talk is flitting from subject to subject and everyone follows perfectly along. It’s interesting. Thanks for sharing that video!
John swears men are telling the truth that they really are thinking about nothing. That is not something I can say about me. My mind runs all over the place.
I didn’t believe my boyfriend at first because I thought it was impossible. But as we see, I’ve been proven wrong, haha. That video Chad shared in his comment was so funny.
he was afraid to say what he was really thinking which, according to science, is sex. from what i have read, men think about sex every few seconds. 😉
Haha! You may be right. Because science!
🙂
This question bugs guys because nothing is truly an honest answer.
It just was unbelievable to me that he could be blank. When he said “nothing”, I thought he meant “nothing important”. Now I know better, haha.
Right this minute I am thinking I wish I would read the blogs I follow when they are published and not get so far behind. And I am thinking I should go to bed but, I don;t want to.
Sometimes when I am asked what I am thinking I really don’t know…I sort of wander off into space somewhere and I can never remember anything about the trip.
That is a real true kind of answer, haha – all the little thoughts that go through our brain. Those are the kind of things that I’d say “nothing” if someone asked what I was thinking. Just little things floating around in my head.
Another friend said the same thing – sometimes whatever she was thinking is gone before she has time to say what it was, haha.
Good to know I am not alone out there in space. The thing is sometimes I just know what I was thinking was wonderful but I can’t recall it. It’s like when you wake up from a good dream and poof it’s gone.
