t-shirts,
I could never make this up.

t-shirts?
It’s not what I imagined.

In the back of my mind
was moonlight and soft breezes,
walking and talking till dawn,
maybe a glance across a crowded room…

And now I find myself weak-kneed

Really Valuable Lessons…can really suck

When I was 14, I learned a really valuable lesson.

And it really sucked.

The lesson I learned is that not all of your friends are actually friends.  It took me about a year to figure this out, but I did, and at the same time, I learned that sometimes you just have to cut your losses.  There are some people who you just can’t be friends with, or rather, that you shouldn’t be close friends with.  You shouldn’t work hard to nurture intimate friendships with people who behave in ways that are against to your best interests, with people who damage you.  These are not friends.  I believe. To give or not to give?

…Nannie brought up her old neighbors and she told us about how her neighbor Burt used to always borrow onions, tea and potatoes.  She said that he had borrowed so many onions, tea and potatoes that there were no hopes of him ever paying them back.  Not that he intended to.  So one day she resolved that she would put an end to this constant borrowing.

That night, she was reading in her Bible Study, and the Bible verse said that if anyone borrows from you, give freely. And if he comes the next day and borrows more, give again.  So the next time Burt asked, she again gave.

In later years, when Grandpop was drunk and had fallen down, she would call for Burt.

And he would always come.

He’d say, “Come on Jim, and lie down.”  Grandpop would say he didn’t want to lie down.  But Burt would pick him up anyway.  “Come on Jim and lie down a while.  It’ll make you feel better.”

Nannie said those times were worth more to her than any amounts of onions, tea and potatoes.

They had a scare during the night, and I really believe that, had my sister not been awake, I may never have met this child.  Just the thought puts a knot in my chest and, honestly, I have to turn away from it.  I can’t imagine what that would be like. Continue Reading…
