It was my fourth visit, and I was surprised by the number of people there.  Dismayed, even.  But what did I expect, coming on a spring Saturday?  Twice I had gone by night, quiet, Lincoln’s stern reflection glowing off black granite.

My mother came this time and she cried.  “He used to be so funny.”  I never imagined she’d find a memory here, like so many others.  Why did it shock me so?

I found my way to the name I met my first time.  12 West, line 52.  “Hi Donald.”

There’s a man making rubbings and I follow him.  He’s so busy.  I keep following and now I steal my chance.  “Will you do one for me?”  I take pictures of the old man’s hands, rubbing pencil over paper, and in my mind, I make up a life to go with the name.

A young boy walks by with his father, and I hear him ask the question.  The father says, “Ah…jeez, well it all started…”

  1. my parents guilted me into it
  2. my neighbor told me how many times he and his wife have seen bobcats around here
  3. there was recently a snake in my yard (click here to read about that)

I’ve lived here for 13+ years and Louis has lived here for 8+ years.  Nothing’s ever gotten him yet, but that doesn’t mean it can’t ever happen.  For the past year or so, my parents have pretty consistently shared their concerns that an owl is going to swoop down out of the sky, snatch up their little Grand-Doggy and eat him up.  “He’s a little dog.  An owl will grab up a little dog before you know it.” continue reading

Why Did I Buy This?

Working in retail can be a real problem for someone with my limited funds and unlimited wants.

This is never so clear to me as when I’m running the register.  So many products!  My wants seem to multiply as the day goes on. “How is it that I’ve never seen this item? What aisle is this on?  Oh, that’s nice!”
