Hope Springs Eternal

Does it?

I think for most of us it does.  Hope must be a bottomless well, an emotion that bubbles up from inside us, from a limitless source, from a natural spring.

It must be.  Because if you run out of hope, then you have no reason to go on.  Hope is our link between what is and what could be.

There were times in my youth when I definitely did not want to be in my life.  I would have been extremely happy if I could have crawled into a crevice somewhere, curled into a ball and simply gone to sleep.  But however welcome the sleep would have been, I wanted to eventually wake up.  I wanted a break, not an end.  I never contemplated an end because something really great could happen the next day and I wouldn’t be here to enjoy it.  I believe that is hope.  I didn’t create it within myself, it was just there.  It gave me what I needed to hold on until the next day, or the next, or the one after that.

Is Love Enough?

Go on, now.  You know you want to.

Consequentially Speaking

On the one hand, this week’s Query started out to be a kind of dud.  Hey, it happens to the best of us, right?  Basically, I was getting a bunch of looks that amounted to “Well, yeah…duh.”

But I’ve learned a lot as I’ve been asking questions of people over the last two months. continue reading…

What is Art? Contradicting Tolstoy

In preparation for the next Query, I’ve been asking people this  question about Art:  “What do you think is more important, the perception of the audience, or the intent of the artist?”  (Click here to see what people said.)

Yesterday, I posted a poem and asked readers to interpret its meaning.  I know what the poet intended, but I can personally think of at least three different possible interpretations.  In past discussions, some have said they don’t have a clue what it’s about, but they just don’t like it.  Not because they can’t figure it out, but specifically because it makes them uncomfortable.

So let me rephrase the original question: is it enough to elicit any response, or does it have to be the right response? continue reading…
