That’s a good point. I have been more and more selfish of my time especially, as I’ve aged. I think my heart and sympathy and wish to help has increased – let’s say my awareness has increased. But my inclination to follow that through with effort has decreased.
If you look at the quote in a bare faced way, it’s saying that the older we get, the more we gain: knowledge, skill, understanding, awareness. And those are things that enable us to better help “the world”. But I took it the same way you did – and I fall pretty short in the helping the world category.
